(2) Just the Ordinary

I guess it was just another ordinary day. Class, a few run-ins with the friends, and the usual. The highlight of the night however, is that Ted Kopple, best known as the TV anchor for Nightline actually came to our school for a presentation on his career, as well as a bonus Q&A session afterward. I really wanted to go, and since I need to attend a few presentations for journalism 101 anyway (PR is in the journalism department at Ball State) I figured it would work out pretty well.

This semester I joined the AASA, Asian-American Student Association, and they're planning a fashion show with general meetings held every Monday, and Fashion Show meetings every Tuesday at 8:00PM. Well, since Ted Kopple was here this week.... Kyle and I tried to ditch for Mr. Kopple.
We met up for dinner at around 6:45, but when we finally headed over to Pruis Hall it was full. I guess our plans for ditching the AASA Fashion Show meeting for Ted Kopple had been foiled. I felt bad. A lot of people looked really disappointed that it was full. Residents from Muncie come to these events, so sometimes its sad to see that not everyone can always get in. But I suppose that's to be expected, most of the time.

Well, we wound up the library anyway and Kyle gave me the grand tour-not that I've never been in the library before. But I never knew that there were so many interesting sections and corners where all kinds of random things are displayed. He showed me a corner of the library that I didn't even know existed, and there was this coffee-table touch-screen computer-I believe its called the Microsoft Surface. It is really cool. Its basically a table, only with a computer built into it. I'm not entirely sure what it works with or how it works, but apparently one can hook up their laptop and go from there. I'm pretty sure its still relatively new, so I'm sure there will be all kinds of crazy things to do with it when it really starts to hit the market.
Check it out
Apparently, there's a very limited quantity of the Surface, so its pretty cool that Ball State actually has one.

Afterward, we wound up downstairs in the music section and came across every composer you can think of. There was practically an entire bookcase dedicated to Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Bach, and all kinds of other famous dudes. There were also a lot of international books that weren't even translated into English. But we were really surprised to find two Guitar Hero books; luckily it was how to play the songs on real instruments.
So we wandered around the music section for probably around 30 minutes. We even came along an erotic folk songs book. I'm not sure what the date was, but it was pretty old. Probably around the late 1800's or so. It was so funny, and filled with all kinds of adultery and sexual themes. And here I thought everyone was so conservative back in the day.
One of the poems was about a guy in a hotel watching a woman undress through the keyhole in her door. Another was about a lady asking for a "pin", and the man offered his pin for her "pin cushion". Then there was the sexist one where the couple wanted to do the hanky-panky, but the woman was afraid of becoming pregnant. From what I remember, the man told her to suck it up and came up with the brilliant solution that if it was a girl, they'd strangle her the moment she was born; and if they had a boy they'd just send him off to sea.
Ugh.

We left the music section and continued to wander around the main floor of the basement. Kyle pointed out a poster of different famous children's books, and we reminisced about books we used to read. I didn't really recognize any of them. I was too obsessed with Dr. Seuss and Disney books in my day. Eventually we wound up upstairs, and not too much later we ran into the folks of AASA. Busted!
It didn't seem like anyone was truly bothered by the fact that we ditched, but considering Kyle is president of AASA... I guess I could see that as being a little controversial (but we had fun ditching!).

So we all chatted for awhile, and I guess yesterday at AASA I made plans to go to iHop for free pancake day with Abraham and Jim... which, I thought was tomorrow. I would have gone, but its just so hard to be spontaneous when something involves driving. My car is parked at the stadium (which requires a bus-ride) and I didn't have my car keys or license with me, so I didn't really want to go. I got caught off guard. I feel guilty because I said I would go, but I got the dates mixed up and I had already eaten dinner anyway.

Kyle had to go back to start working on some homework and stuff, but about 10 minutes later he comes rushing back into the library with news that something happened at the Ted Kopple presentation, that there was some type of panic-attack and everyone had to evacuate Pruis Hall. There were ambulances on the scene and everything. I'll have to pick up the BSU newspaper tomorrow and find out what happened!
But that's really unfortunate. I mean I feel bad for whoever freaked out (unless someone was actually going crazy and threatening Mr. Ted), but his presentation was ruined. Jesse Jackson was even here not too long ago, so we've been getting some big-name speakers to visit our school. With a situation like this, maybe the next speaker we invite will have a second thought as to whether or not they want to visit. But I still have to find out what really happened before I make any assumptions.

But overall it was a good day. Very relaxed and laid back. No complaints about those type of days. This post was a lot longer than I thought it would be, so I'm gonna go ahead and sign out! Hope I didn't bore ya~!

  1. I read Disney books too! My mom signed me up for a Disney book club and they'd send new mini Disney books in the mail every couple of months. It was awesome! I still think I have some of them too.
