(1) A challenge awaits?

Today marks the beginning of the challenge. The challenge to write one blog per day for 90 days. Can I do it? I certainly think so, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Let me see, let me see.... Where should I start? For those of you who haven't been keeping up with my life as of lately, I go to Ball State University in Muncie, IN. It's pretty cool. As a matter of fact, I like it here a lot. I'm studying Public Relations as my major, and after years and year of waiting, I am finally studying Japanese. Textbook, teacher, and everything. It rocks.
Like any campus, I've definitely got a few stories here and there to share. Let me tell you about my most recent story...

The other day, a few friends and I were walking back to our dorm buildings from Club Japan (club-what? Stay tuned for more info!). We finally came to Lafollette, so Bryan and I branched off from the others who were headed to the Johnson complex. As we approached the entryway to our building, we noticed a girl sitting upwards against the wall with her eyes closed as though she was sleeping-or maybe passed out-or something. We looked at over at each other; probably with some of the funniest faces. How are you supposed to react when you're just minding your own business and suddenly you run into an unconscious girl outside at 10:00 at night? Especially considering the fact that its winter, snowy and wet outside, less than 20 degrees, she didn't have a hat, scarf, gloves... Nothing but a red peacoat (well I mean she had pants and shoes and all the those other necessities... oh, you get it).
Basically, this just isn't right.

So we ask each other "Should we do something?"
I started waving my hands around and yelling "Hello?!" in her direction, but she was completely unresponsive. Bryan and I just stood there for a few moments wondering what to do. I really didn't want to touch her or get too close. Was it wrong for me to assume that there's a possibility this girl might be crazy?

So I look back over at Bryan and we decided that we should probably go tell some of the staff working inside at the food court. We scurry inside to the Out of Bounds (which is the name of the food place) and tell the cashiers that there's a girl outside passed out. They assumed we meant outside the store, but we told them she was literally outside in the cold.
So the supervisors grab their radios and start making calls, while one of the student workers jumps right in and wants us to lead him to this girl. Quite heroic, don't ya think? ;p

So as we're headed back outside, we caught the attention of a big group of kids hanging out/eating, and I overhear one of them suddenly talking about "the passed out girl".
Wait, wait, wait, wait....
So, people have just been walking past this girl all this time?
Nobody did anything? Who knows how long she was out there, and she was barely dressed appropriately. She could be frostbitten or suffering from hypothermia by now!

So we get outside, and the employee tries yelling towards her the same way Bryan and I did. She was still unresponsive, so he goes right up to her and starts tapping her shoulder.
Ta~da~!!!
She magically awakens!

Wait, what?? That's all it took? Bryan or I could've done that easily!!
Anyway, the employee asks her if she's alright, and she just takes a breath, smiles, and says
"Yeah. I'm fine!" :)
So she gets up, and just walks away.

And that was it...

Everyone (including people inside) watch her go back inside, and up the stairs as if nothing happened.
It was so bizarre.

So what do you guys think? Kind of a funny story (actually, kinda really funny), but why didn't those people at the Out of Bounds do anything if they saw someone...Uh, eyes-closed-and-unresponsive (Extreme hot flashes? Possessed by a demon? On drugs? Was she engaged in a religious mediation and we actually disturbed her from reaching Nirvana? I still do not know), outside in the cold? Just laugh and walk away? Are good Samaritans as common as they should be?

Anyway, hope you enjoyed #1.

89 more to go, and I hope you'll stay tuned ;)

  1. I actually found out on a second return that Mr. Kopel is fine and no one had to be evacuated, rather the main presentation was over and it was just a Q and A session. The kid still freaked the hell out though.
